“A deeply reported and business-savvy chronicle of Tesla's wild ride.” —Walter Isaacson, New York Times Book Review “[A] sweeping history of the electric-car juggernaut…I’ve covered Tesla as a reporter since 2016. When Higgins writes about facts and situations I’m familiar with, I can attest he’s right on the button, every time.” —Russ Mitchell, Los Angeles TimesPower Play is the riveting inside story of Elon Musk and Tesla's bid to build the world's greatest car—from award-winning Wall Street Journal tech and auto reporter Tim HigginsElon Musk is among the most controversial titans of Silicon Valley. To some he's a genius and a visionary; to others he's a mercurial huckster. Billions of dollars have been gained and lost on his tweets; his personal exploits are the stuff of tabloids. But for all his outrageous talk of mind-uploading and space travel, his most audacious vision is the one closest to the ground: the electric car. When Tesla was founded in the 2000s, electric cars were novelties, trotted out and thrown on the scrap heap by carmakers for more than a century. But where most onlookers saw only failure, a small band of Silicon Valley engineers and entrepreneurs saw opportunity. The gas-guzzling car was in need of disruption. They pitted themselves against the biggest, fiercest business rivals in the world, setting out to make a car that was quicker, sexier, smoother, cleaner than the competition. But as the saying goes, to make a small fortune in cars, start with a big fortune. Tesla would undergo a hellish fifteen years, beset by rivals, pressured by investors, hobbled by whistleblowers, buoyed by its loyal supporters. Musk himself would often prove Tesla's worst enemy—his antics more than once took the company he had initially funded largely with his own money to the brink of collapse. Was he an underdog, an antihero, a conman, or some combination of the three?Wall Street Journal tech and auto reporter Tim Higgins had a front-row seat for the drama: the pileups, wrestling for control, meltdowns, and the unlikeliest outcome of all, success. A story of power, recklessness, struggle, and triumph, Power Play is an exhilarating look at how a team of eccentrics and innovators beat the odds—and changed the future.

This book has three parts, and 28 total chapters, with about 335 pages, not including the Notes section. This first few chapters of the book, discuss the early ideas of JB Straubel, and the plans for an electric car developed by Martin Eberhard, who later went on to found Tesla Motors. The early days of Tesla are described, with most of the funding coming from Musk, who had already made millions from the sale of PayPal and had recently started SpaceX. Higgins covers Musk's relationship with his first wife Justine, early fund raising efforts, Musk's request for Antonio Gracias to join Tesla, early Roadster issues, and Michael Marks eventually replacing Eberhard as CEO.Part Two focuses more on Musk's time as CEO, and staving off bankruptcy after the financial collapse of 2008. There are also chapters that discuss the contributions of Peter Rawlinson, Musk's divorce, lawsuits, CFO Deepak Ahuja, Tesla's IPO, and George Blankenship.Part Three documents the next phase in the evolution of Tesla. Chapters discuss battery development, supercharger stations, the Gigafactory, Jerome Guillen, the shorting of Tesla stock, SolarCity, a potential deal with Apple, the Model 3, and controversial Musk tweets and statements. Higgins also covers several leaks to the media from Tesla employees, Musk's smoking of cannabis on Joe Rogan's podcast, SEC investigations, and Tesla building plants in China.Overall, this book has a great deal of information about the history of Tesla, and the behind-the-scenes interactions with Elon Musk. While I appreciate all of the information about the early history and ideas behind Tesla's designs, I'm always somewhat skeptical when it comes to accounts of what transpired in meetings behind closed doors; especially when the accounts are largely from people that left Tesla on bad terms.I think it is also worth noting, that both Musk and Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, have stated that the alleged phone conversation reported in this book never actually took place. Cook stated that he has never spoken to Musk, and Musk also denied ever talking to Cook. Musk also recently tweeted that this book was “both false and boring”, which perhaps is not surprising given the way the book often portrays him. I would tend to agree that at times the storytelling isn't the most exciting, and this book might only appeal to people very interested in the history of the company. Still, 3.5 / 5 for me.
